On Saturday February 7th, students and teachers from Region 5 and Region 8 braved the cold and snow and construction for the 5th Annual Central Ohio Clinic. Once again held at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, this clinic brought together many studios and instructors including Master Richard Rutherford (American TSD), Master Dan Jansa (Eagle Academy of Martial Arts), Master Scott Homschek (River Valley TSD Academy), Master Matt Ochs (Grand Tradition Martial Arts), Master Michael Inoshita Elmhurst TSD), Simone Genna (Buckeye TSD), Mark Jorgensen (Keystone Martial Arts), Michael DePew (Carthage TSD), Willie DeChant (Lexus-Nexus TSD), Lifetime TSD (Leslie Flaum), Michael Wilson (WISK), and Mary Treacy (OBT TSD).

The training goal of the Central Ohio Clinic has always been to maximize training time while minimizing wasted time and this year was no exception.

Our training began with some short introductions, Dan promotions and a donation to the Region 5 Scholarship Fund and immediately moved into a riveting basic drill led by Master Inoshita.

Anthony Perkins coordinated a special youth program which allowed the students to taste and experience almost every facet of physical training that we get in class: group drill, Hyungs, targeting (with Master Inoshita), one-steps, free sparring, Ho Sin Sul (with Master Jansa) and an obstacle course.

For the adults, after basic drill they moved into group Hyungs and then it was time to begin our day’s breakout sessions. We had some popular staple sessions including Non-Assoc. One-Steps with Master Jansa, Rope Techniques with Master Homschek and Stick Fighting with Master Inoshita. We also had some new innovative sessions including Flashlight Self-Defense with Chris Anderson (Grand Tradition Martial Arts) and Musical Hyung with Michael Wilson.

Several students even took the opportunity to spend their entire afternoon sparring as we featured two contrasting sessions: Free-Sparring with Mark Jorgensen and Tournament Sparring with Steven Elmore (Grand Tradition Martial Arts).

Our day’s training concluded with a spirited group drill led by Master Homschek.

Many thanks to everyone involved as this clinic was the largest in its 5-year history with 104 participants. We also successfully raised over $2,500 for the Building Fund, Regional Fund, and Regional Scholarship Fund!
